AnimalDex
AnimalDex is the real-world Pokédex: photograph an animal, add it to your collection, and learn to recognize the living world around you.
You photograph a real animal — garden, farm, forest, sea or wildlife park. The app suggests the species, you confirm, and the card joins your collection (rarity, habitat, continent) with XP and a daily challenge. You can also install the PWA, play Memory, or get the €9.99 lifetime Premium pass.
AnimalDex is not animaldex.app
animaldex.app is a different product, an English-language store app. AnimalDex is the website and PWA at https://www.animaldex.fr — a French project, not an App Store or Play Store app named animaldex.app.
Who edits AnimalDex
AnimalDex is edited from Belgium. The public site is https://www.animaldex.fr. There is no anonymous newsroom and no aggregator republishing cards unread. Game texts, guides and species descriptions are kept in this site’s catalogue.
The aim is simple: help people recognise real animals by photographing them, rather than scrolling empty names. The game — XP, rarities, daily challenge, memory — is a reason to go out and confirm a species. It is not permission to approach, and it is not an official scientific inventory.
Why this catalogue
The catalogue holds a little over 260 species. That number is not “every species in Europe” or “every animal in the world”. They are species a player can meet in a garden, on a farm, in a wood, on a shore, or in a zoo, and that a phone photo can still name. Domestic animals are included because people really photograph them. Zoo species are included because that is often the only honest place to see them without pretending a wild encounter.
Each public card repeats the short catalogue description, then sections on identification, habitat, rhythm, a status with no invented figure, and how to watch. Links at the foot of the card point to Wikipedia, GBIF, the IUCN and, for Europe, INPN. If one of those sources contradicts the card, the up-to-date source wins.
How the content is updated
Descriptions and scientific names are versioned with the site. A correction starts from a sighting, a misread card, or a gap against a cited database. Population figures are not published: those numbers move, and a game card would freeze them. Status stays qualitative — domestic, check the source, of concern, protected, monitored — and only when it can be stated without invention.
Guides under /guides/ are dated. The date at the top of each article is the latest editorial update. The author shown is AnimalDex. Reading languages are French, English, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German and Portuguese. Card and guide text can be read without an account. The account is only for the collection and the photos.
What the site is not
AnimalDex is not animaldex.app. That other address is a store application, in English, independent of this project. An account, a payment or a card on one does not count for the other. This site’s Premium pass, €9.99 lifetime via Stripe, removes ads here. It does not unlock another catalogue.
Advertising, when it is shown to visitors who are not Premium, does not replace the text. The educational text stays visible. For data and cookies, the privacy policy and the terms of use are linked at the bottom of the page.
