AnimalDex is not animaldex.app
AnimalDex · 26 September 2026
Two products, two addresses: this site is the animaldex.fr PWA, edited in Belgium.
Two names that are too close
AnimalDex, written with a capital D, at https://www.animaldex.fr, is the website and the PWA described here. animaldex.app is another product, an application distributed on the stores, in English, which this site does not publish. The names look alike. The catalogues, accounts, payments and rules are not the same. If you arrived here looking for the store application, you are not on that product. If you want to photograph a real animal and add it to this site’s collection, you are in the right place.
This page exists so the difference is written in full, not only in a footer sentence. Search engines and readers mix the two. An article, a forum or a directory entry can cite one while meaning the other. Here, every time the name AnimalDex appears, it means animaldex.fr.
What this site does
You take a photo of a real animal: garden, farm, woodland, shore or zoo. The site suggests a species from the catalogue, you confirm, and the card joins your collection with a rarity, a habitat, a continent and XP. There is a daily challenge, a memory game, a ranking, and a lifetime Premium pass at €9.99 that removes ads. Payment, when it is offered, goes through Stripe. The catalogue holds a little over 260 species, chosen because they can be photographed, not in order to cover every animal in the world.
Species cards are public. You do not need an account to read identification, habitat, behaviour, status and sources. The account is for saving your photos and your progress. Reference texts — Wikipedia, GBIF, the IUCN, INPN for Europe — are linked from the card. This site is not the author of those databases.
The site is edited from Belgium. Interface languages are French, English, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German and Portuguese. French is the default. The others open with the lang parameter, without changing the card’s address.
What this site does not do
It does not sell the animaldex.app application and it does not support it. A purchase, a subscription or an account created on the stores does not transfer here. An account created here does not open the other application. If a store screen, an icon or a privacy policy shows the address animaldex.app, that is not this PWA.
It does not promise you will see a species because it is in the catalogue. Game rarity is not a protection status. The guides and the cards repeat it: watch without disturbing, do not force an approach for XP, do not upload an image found online.
It does not replace a natural-history guide or an official database. When a sentence on the site and an up-to-date source disagree, the source wins. Card content is updated in this site’s catalogue, not by synchronising with another application of a similar name.
How to talk about it without mixing them
If you cite the project, write AnimalDex and the address www.animaldex.fr. If you mean the other product, write animaldex.app. Avoid “the AnimalDex app” on its own: both can be called that by mistake. This one installs as a PWA from the browser, on the phone, without a store listing named animaldex.app.
Species cards on this site have an address like https://www.animaldex.fr/animaux/1/. Guides live under https://www.animaldex.fr/guides/. None of that is a page of the other product. Collection filters, with rarity or habitat parameters, are not the reference content: the card and the guides are.
Further reading on this site
Neighbouring guides explain how to recognise a garden bird, separate similar species, photograph with a phone and read rarity. The About page says who edits the site and how the catalogue is kept. Terms and privacy describe the account, photos and advertising.
If a card misnames an animal, the correction is made in this site’s catalogue, from the scientific name on the card and from what was observed. That correction stays on animaldex.fr and only in the public catalogue. It is not a support channel for animaldex.app.
AnimalDex remains the name of this project. It is not renamed to avoid the confusion. The confusion is cleared by writing the address next to the name, whenever doubt is possible. A reader in a hurry can keep three markers: the site ends in .fr, the editor is in Belgium, and species cards live under /animaux/. None of that describes animaldex.app. If a search result shows both names in the same sentence, open the address bar before you create an account or pay. A Premium purchase on animaldex.fr stays on animaldex.fr. It does not unlock a store listing, and a store purchase does not remove ads here. The guides, the species cards and the about page are the public face of this project only.
